Robertsbridge

Robertsbridge is a Medieval village in Sussex, it quickly became prosperous after being granted a market charter in the 13th century and is reported to have paranormal activity.

The village was controlled by the Hawkhurst gang who ran a smuggling ring between 1735 and 1749. John Amos a resident of Robertsbridge was a prominent member of the gang whose influence extended from there to Dover in Kent. The gang operated freely enough to use as many as 500 pack horses to carry contraband and even raid a government customs house in Southampton to recover captured goods.

It was in Robertsbridge that a famous ambush took place. 30 smugglers under the influence of alcohol ambushed a wagon load of contraband tea, killing the customs officer in the process.

The village has two public houses, one being the Seven Stars which is believed to date back to before this era. The currant building was erected around 1400 and is only 10 years newer than the earliest surviving building in Robertsbridge.  It is listed as one of the top ten haunted pubs in England after many reports of phantom footsteps, strange noises, shadowy apparitions and dogs reacting strangely to unseen occurrences. This was an Inn reported to have been frequented by smugglers in the 18th century, so are the strange noises in the middle of the night connected, who knows?

A nice little village and friendly pub. Unfortunately we didn't manage to obtain any evidence of paranormal activity on our visit. The landlord of the Seven Stars was friendly but doesn't allow private paranormal investigations due to security and safety. The people in the Seven Stars were friendly with lots of 'ghost' stories connected with the pub, but it was too busy for us to come to any conclusion as far as this being one of the most haunted pubs in England. We did manage to photograph a few orbs but that was about it.
