Arundel Goal

The Old Town prison cells are situated below the Town Hall in the High  Street.

The prison was used for incarcerating prisoners from 1836 and were used as holding cells for the courts up to five years ago.

The weather was dry and fine.

Investigators - Jackie, Bill, Paul, Rose and Terry

Most members  were disappointed and felt oppression when entering the cells, but this may have been due to the fact it was quite small and a prison. There were only 4 cells and the hall. It had also been turned into the Ghost experience which makes a bit of a  mockery of serious paranormal investigation.  We also had to make lots of notes as to where the Ghost experience props were so that they did not interfere with the investigation.

Approx 9pm

Rose saw a man with dark hair and a tash, wearing a black cape with a chain across the top as a fastener.  Black trousers and a black hat.  She felt he may have been a Policeman or someone in uniform.

Cell 3

Jackie  while alone in Cell 3  heard a man say “I  be then (sounded like Don/Ron/John)” She then saw a man with Dark black longish hair, which was greasy and untidy. He was slim and unshaven approx 5’8 -5’10.  She felt he was an evil man and didn’t feel he was confined to staying in that cell.  She also felt someone tapped on the bench she was laying on from the underside.  At the same time someone sitting outside the cell saw a bright light float up from Jackie’s sandals towards the ceiling.  This man was also picked up by another member of the group.

Approx 9.30pm

Jackie alone in Cell 2 saw a man who seemed to have some kind of problem with his left ear.

Séance 1 Video room

We began with a séance which was held in the Video room.  Rose didn't want complete darkness so a candle was lit and placed on a table in the centre of the room.

We did a meditation and spirit was asked to draw closer towards the circle.  As we began to ask questions, we notice the candle began to move when the answer seemed to be 'yes'.  So we did some tests to make sure it wasn't any member.  Satisfied we decided to carry on.  We put a camcorder on in the hopes of filming something but the spirit was against it as you can see from the video below.

Jackie felt very tearful while other members felt tickling on their faces.  She then felt as if she had been struck over the right hand side of the head, at the same time Jo felt a headache and pressure to her head while others felt their eyes watering.  There was then a strange smell which Jackie said was like a gas, others agreed.

Several of the group said they felt as if they were being watched by different spirits and as if 'people' were lining up outside the cell door.

Jackie felt a strong presence of something being put around her neck, like a rope or something and felt as if she was being strangled.  She started coughing at this point but it stopped when  she asked spirit to draw back away from her.  At the time of Jackie’s  coughing a passing over/death  was felt by an member of the group.

Most members felt very cold chills on and off during the séance, although there were no drafts.

On break.

We were standing in a group near the back of the main hall, chatting about the events so far when Rose suddenly gave out an "OH" and jumped forward.  Said something to Terry thinking it was him but it wasn't.  Rose said she felt her jacket was being pulled. So she moved nearer the wall so that no one could walk behind her, but it happened again.  She said it was like someone pulling her jacket up to get to her pockets.  Rose then moved to the opposite side of the group where it then stopped.  At the same time of this happening Jackie sensed spirit walking past to the right hand side of the group, but couldn't get an images of who they were.

Kitchen approx 2a.m. Bill and Jackie

Jackie saw a man walk past the door.  he had dark hair wearing a black cape and flattish hat bit like the old railway station masters hat.   (Could this be the same man as Rose had seen earlier?)

2nd séance in main hall.

We lit a candle and started with another meditation.  Jackie saw a lady in her 20's and was given the name of Lucy.  She also saw a man who had a problem with his right eye, it looked very swollen and almost closed.  Alan also felt a pain in their right eye and felt it was being pushed in.  The name of John was picked up by a couple of the group. (Could this be the John that Jackie got earlier in cell 3?)

Solitary cell

Paul heard the name Francis Turner

Stairs

Most of the group felt that spirit were passing them while on the stairs and one spot in particular was very cold.  This also showed on the temperature monitor.  Jackie felt someone had been punched in the stomach and pushed down the stairs.  Paul also sensed someone had been pushed down the stairs.

Cell 3

Rose saw a dark haired man, pacing along the wall, drawing his fingers along the wall. She also 'saw' another man digging his heels back and fourth along the floor and saw a 'light' on the wall.

 Cell 2

Bill and Jackie heard scratching.

Stairs

While sitting on the stairs.  Rose saw a man wearing a wig, similar to that of a judge.  He was wearing knee length Emerald/Bottle Green Satin trousers and Jacket, black shoes with a buckle and a white filly shirt.  She thought it a bit strange because he seemed to be dressed in 18th century clothes yet the cells were 19th century.  The man appeared to have a man on either side of him and was resisting being pulled down the stairs by them.  This again she thought strange as the stairs were quite narrow for three people to stand side by side.

There was one funny incident but at the same time disappointing.  While some members were in the Solitary cell, others in the hall chatting when the kettle started to boil.  We all got very excited as we thought we were in the presence of a mischievous spirit.  Unfortunately our sceptic Bill put an end to all that.  He was aware that some kettles re-boiled when they dropped to a certain temperature if the switch was left down.  We put it to the test and Bill was right.  So a lot of disappointed investigators, well except for Bill, who couldn't stop laughing - typical sceptic.

Conclusion - It was a good evening made remarkable by the candle thing, which even our sceptics Bill, Paul and Terry couldn't explain but we were unable to capture any evidence on tape, film or voice recorder.

Conclusion - It was an interesting and enjoyable night.  Various members picked up on spirit, but we didn't manage to get any E.V.P's or strange photos so apart from the candle which is still unexplained.
